Burlington News is a resident-built civic-information project. It is not run by the City, Halton Region, a political party, candidate, campaign or public agency.
Why it exists
Local information is scattered across City pages, agendas, campaign sites, public records, reporting and community discussion. The goal is to do the reading, keep the source attached and explain the useful part in normal language.
The site began as a municipal election guide. It can now also cover Burlington civic news, decisions and explainers, while the Election Guide remains a distinct section.
Election coverage
- No candidate endorsements or preferred candidates.
- Candidates are given the same basic structure: overview, priorities, experience and record, questions worth checking and sources.
- Campaign promises are labelled as promises. Public records are used for facts that can be independently checked.
- Positive and critical public comments can be included when they raise a substantive point, but their factual claims are checked separately.
- If something cannot be verified, the site says so rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
Local news
Burlington News covers local government, schools, events, food, sports, wildlife, history and useful things to do. Automated monitoring can find and refresh source-linked updates, but relevance and source quality matter more than volume.
Outside news about Oakville, Hamilton, Toronto or the wider region appears only when there is a clear Burlington consequence. Social posts can surface a lead; they are not treated as proof, polling or permission to reuse somebody's image.
Automation and editorial responsibility
Software can check selected sources, remove duplicates and help draft a concise summary. It cannot replace verification. Substantive articles keep their sources attached and are reviewed before publication; uncertain facts are omitted or labelled. Burlington News remains responsible for what it publishes.
