If you are looking at the first week of September and wondering whether you missed something, you did not.

For Halton District School Board students, the first day of instruction is Tuesday, Sept. 8. Staff are back earlier, but students are not.

The reason is a strange calendar stack: two PA days arrive before Labour Day, then the holiday lands on Monday.

Dates to save
  • Sept. 2: elementary and secondary PA day
  • Sept. 3: elementary and secondary PA day
  • Sept. 7: Labour Day
  • Sept. 8: first day of instruction
  • Oct. 9: next system-wide PA day
  • Oct. 12: Thanksgiving

Why Sept. 8 matters beyond the classroom

The date does more than tell students when to show up. It is also the morning Burlington's school buses, drop-off traffic and school-zone congestion return at the same time.

For families, the extra days create one last child-care gap before the normal routine starts. For commuters, Sept. 8 is the day routes near schools begin behaving like school routes again.

The next date is easier to miss

Friday, Oct. 9 is the next elementary and secondary PA day. Because Thanksgiving follows on Monday, Oct. 12, students get a four-day weekend.

That is the date most likely to surprise somebody who gets through September and assumes the calendar is normal again.

One calendar does not cover every Burlington student

This schedule is for the Halton District School Board. Catholic-board and private-school calendars can differ, so families should confirm their own school's schedule before booking child care, transportation or time off work.

Good to know: the board also schedules early-dismissal days later in the year. Those can affect pickup and after-school care even though they are not full PA days.
