Rabies is rare, but it is serious. The useful question for residents is not whether seeing a bat is dangerous. It is whether a person or pet may have had direct contact with a bat or another potentially rabid animal.
What counts as a concern
A bite, scratch or saliva contact with broken skin or the eyes, nose or mouth can require assessment. Anyone who thinks they may have been exposed should contact Halton Region Public Health promptly rather than waiting for symptoms.
For pets
Keeping rabies vaccination current is the main protection for dogs and cats. If a pet has contact with a bat or other wild animal, contact a veterinarian and Halton Region for advice.
